    Grandma’s Rolls

Every year during the holidays I make a batch of dinner rolls to share with friends and family. I started years ago with a basic recipe from my baking cookbook. Through lots of practice and much trial and error, I gradually developed the ability to work with yeast and bake a decent dinner roll. I started this because of my Grandma Reese. You see, we never had a big family dinner without Grandma’s rolls. The very smell and flavor bring back so many good memories. I wanted to recreate that experience. Even though I used some good recipes through the years and tried some different variations such as whole wheat…

    Always Thankful

I love Thanksgiving! I love fall in general with its warm, vivid colors. If I could (and honestly, who is going to stop me?) I would decorate my house for fall all year long. I love the colors of the changing leaves. I love the rustic decor of pumpkins, scarecrows, Indian corn, dried corn stalks, straw bales, mums, and anything else that represents fall (except scary Halloween decorations – I don’t like those!). I look forward to Thanksgiving praise services at church where we focus on singing praises to the Lord and sharing with each other what we are thankful for. The highlight for me is enjoying a traditional Thanksgiving…

    Farmhouse Hospitality

Home Sweet Farmhouse Our farmhouse is slowly starting to feel like home. A majority of the painting is done. The living room carpet has been professionally cleaned, and most of our furniture is in. Today we will add the bookshelves and game cabinets along with a couple of end tables. We are still waiting to get carpet installed upstairs in the kids’ bedrooms and hallway. Once that is done, the kids can get their beds and the rest of their belongings. Right now they have their dressers, hanging clothes in the closet and are sleeping on mattresses on the floor. Beautiful wood laminate flooring has been installed in the dining…

    Changing World, Unchanging God

One of my favorite Bible verses is Hebrews 13:8 which says, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. (KJV) It reminds me that in this world of constant change, there is one thing I can be certain of. Jesus never changes! Buying an old farmhouse and renovating it provides an interesting lesson on change. You see, our house was built about 130 years ago. At least the original part of the house was. There is evidence of change all throughout the structure. First of all, as typical farmhouses go, you can recognize the original part of the house as the two-story box at the heart of…

    A Candy Coated Life?

There is a fun little kid’s Sunday School song that I learned many years ago called “Apple Red Happiness”. The song is joyful, upbeat, fun, and it tells me that if I give my life to Jesus, things will be all happy and sunny and sweet. Wow! Wouldn’t that be great if it were true! I could get saved and all my troubles would be over! Who wouldn’t want that? While Sunday school songs are known for being fun, they are not always known for having great theology. The truth is that God calls us to give our lives to Him, but He never promises that all our troubles will…
